The Courtyard Xiao Yuan Hostel is a lovely little hostel on one of Beijing’s hutongs just 20 to 30 minute walk from the north gate of the Forbidden City.
Location & Getting There
The hutong the hostel is located on is a genuine residential hutong that has not been commercialized or developed for tourism. The hutong is full of small restaurants, grocery stores and local Beijing residents going about their daily lives. Walking and dining on the hutong is a great way to see and experience genuine Beijing culture and life style.
The Xiao Yuan Hostel is located close to the Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square and the Dongzhimen Wai long distance bus stop making it ideal for travel.
The easiest way to reach the hotel is to catch the subway on line 2 to Chaoyangmen station and leave using the B exit. Walk west on Chaoyangmen Inner Street for one block and turn left at Chaoyangmen South Alley. There is a big intersection with a raised walk way so you will know when to turn left. After you turn left on to Chaoyangmen South alley, the hostel’s Lishi hutong will be the second street to your right.
Rates, Bookings & Availability
Prices range from 45rmb for a four bed mixed dorm to 260rmb for private rooms with ensuite. The private rooms are not great value but the dorms are some of the best prices you can get in Beijing where most hostels charge 50rmb for 6 bed dorms.
The dorm normally has at least one bed free and I was there alone for several nights so you would have no problem booking a few days in advance and can probably get a bed with out a reservation. The private rooms are more popular but still not hard to reserve if you book a couple of days in advance.
Rooms & Facilities
Rooms, toilets and common areas are clean, well maintain and in good condition. The center of the hostel is a covered traditional courtyard that is a lounge and eating area for guests to use and a great place to spend the evening. The hostel also regularly has traditional live music in the courtyard during the busy periods.
The traditional courtyard and hutong design of the hostel give it a charming old style Chinese character that adds to your experience in China as well as just providing accommodation.
The hostel also has all the standard facilities such as security lockers, bicycle hire, internet access and luggage storage. Their travel desk is some what informal but they do provide all the basic Beijing tours other larger hostels provide.
The staff are friendly, helpful and are one of the key points that makes a stay in this hostel so enjoyable. They are open, approachable, very helpful, warm and will remember your name and chat with you. The hostel is small and fairly informal so the staff are happy to socialize with you and tell you about travel and life in Beijing and China in general.
