Beijing – QingFeng XiSi Hutong Courtyard Guest House

With an excellent location in Beijing’s hutongs , a comfortable common area, good facilities and a constant stream of friendly travellers, this is my favourite hostel west of the Forbidden City.

The hostel is just under 4 kilometers to the west of the Forbidden City and located in the heart of one of Beijing’s hutong areas.

The hostel is on the fifth hutong of a network of 8 hutongs and down the narrow laneways around the hostel a delight and gives you a real taste of traditional Chinese life. There are also a lot cheap family run shops and restaurants, a number of respectable massage parlours and several obvious and less respectable massage parlours.

Getting There

The easiest way to reach the hostel is by subway. Catch the subway to Pinganli station on line four. Once you exit the subway, cross Dianmen West street and head south on Xisi North street. The hostel is on Xisi North number 5 hutong which is the 4th street to your right. The hutong names are clearly marked so hard to miss. The hostel is down the end of the hutong. Walking from the subway to the hostel should take no more than 10 minutes.

The six bed dorm which is the cheapest costs 60rmb a night and the private rooms with ensuite range from 160rmb to 240rmb. For the quality and comfort of the hostel, the dorm prices are excellent but the private room prices are a little over priced.

Rooms & Facilities

The hostel had recently been renovated and all of the fittings, rooms and furniture such as beds are in good condition and very comfortable. The showers, toilets and laundry were also in good condition, clean and worked well. The hostel used to be a traditional hutong house with a courtyard surrounded by rooms and buildings. When the house was converted into a hostel, the courtyard was covered with a roof and is now the common room. The common room is very comfortable and great for socializing, eating and drinking cheap red Chinese wine other guests in the early hours of the morning.

There is a little internet bar just off the common room with two PC’s and a reasonable internet connection. The hostel also has a direct cable internet connection in the dorm and wifi.

Unlike some hutong hotels, the lobby in this hostel looks like a lobby and works like one with a staff member always there to help out.

I have nothing but praise for the staff who were friendly, professional and helpful. All of the guests I spoke to were very happy with the staff. An English traveller in Beijing studying Chinese had been living at the hostel in the dorm for over a year and said the friendliness of the staff were one of the reasons he chose to live in the hostel.

The staff have a number of tours, events and programs they can book you into at reasonable rates. A polish couple had just come back from one of the hostels Great wall tours and raved about it.

Bookings & Availability

The hostel is very popular with the dorm and rooms regularly booked out so booking in advance is essential. I had to wait three days for a bed to become available last time I was in Beijing because of the hostel being booked out.
