This hostel is great if you have to make a last minute booking, no other hostels are available and you don’t mind roughing it for a night or two. Being surrounded by hutongs is also a big plus.
The hostel is roughly 4 kilometers to the west of the Forbidden City and located in the heart of one of Beijing’s hutong areas. The structure of hostel follows the traditional hutong design with the hostel entrance leading into a small courtyard surrounded by buildings and rooms.
The hostel is surrounded by hutongs and walking down the narrow laneways around the hostel is delightful and gives you a real taste of traditional Chinese life. There are also a lot of very cheap restaurants nearby catering for local residents that serve delicious dishes.
The easiest way to reach the hostel is by subway. Catch the subway to Xisi station on line four. Once you exit the subway go west on Fuchengmeng Inner Street until you hit Zhaodengyu road. Head north on Zhaodengyu road and Anping Alley will be the second road on your left. The hostel is around 100 meters into the alley on the left had side. Walking from the subway to the hostel should take no more than 10 to 15 minutes.
The cheapest prices are for the six bed mixed dorm which is 50rmb per night. The prices for private rooms range 80rmb for a standard 3 bed room to 130rm for a room with a double bed and an ensuite.
Rooms & Facilities
The rooms and facilities are the hostels only major weakness. The beds in the dorms are the old iron type with very thin mattresses that can be hard to sleep on if you are used to soft beds. There is only one power point/power board available for the whole dorm which is a major drawback.
There is no bar or restaurant and the common area is just a few chairs and a small table in the court yard. All that is bearable and ok for 50rmb a night but the biggest problem is one shower and one toilet (one for women and one for men) for dorms and basic rooms. The door of the male toilet did not lock.
All the rooms, toilets, showers and common areas were clean and well looked after, just worn and in need of an upgrade.
The staff are very friendly and helpful and I found them great to deal with. One of the hotel staff came out at 10pm at night to find me when I got lost in the hutongs looking for the hostel on my first night. You’ll have no problem getting help with directions to nearby land marks or making bookings for tours to the Great Wall and other hard to get to attractions.
Bookings & Availability
Beds are very easy to book and you rarely need to book in advance. When most other hostels in Beijing are booked out, you should still be able to get a bed here.
