If you want an excellent value for money hostel in a great location for travel in Hangzhou, the Touran is your best choice.
In terms of location, the Touran Hostel is ideally placed. You’ll be a 15-20 minute walk away or a 5 minute bike ride away from the southern end of the West Lake. The hostel is also very close to three of the bike rental stations (a major plus), a number of small local restaurants and one decent sized supermarket. The hostel is in the hills and surrounded by trees which creates a very relaxed and comfortable atmosphere. The Six Harmonies Pagoda (a top Hangzhou attraction) is around a 10 minute bike ride to the west of the Hostel.
Getting to the hostel from the train station is a little tricky. You catch the K7 at the station and get off at the first stop which is a hospital then catch the Y7 to the zoo which is the last stop. The zoo is very close to the hostel and from the zoo you walk back down the Hu Pao road for around 4-5 minutes until you reach an intersection with a road leading left. The hotel will be just past the intersection on the left hand side.
I recommend you catch a taxi there for the first time. I took 20 minutes to find the hotel when I first arrived and that was after asking for directions several times. The fare should only be 10 to 15RMB and the convenience is well worth the price.
30RMB for a dorm bed a night which is less that $5 US or Australian. Single rooms are 100RMB a night and doubles start at 90RMB.
Rooms & Facilities
The rooms are probably the hostels weakest point. Power points are shared and the toilet/shower is adequate but basic. The dorm holds 12 beds, has one toilet/shower and one table for shared use.
The hostel has all the normal facilities such as wireless internet, restaurant, luggage storage, air conditioning and a very comfortable common room.
The staff are excellent and are one of the hotels best points. They went out of their way to make me comfortable, were friendly and very helpful. They were also had a good working knowledge of travel in Hangzhou and were able to answer all my travel questions such as what bus will take you to which attraction.
The hotel owner is one of China’s budding entrepreneurs who owns several other hotels and is in the process of setting up a chain of bars around China. Looks like he knows how to recruit and train his staff.
Bookings and Availability
I stayed there from Monday to Thursday and only shared the 12 bed dorm with one other person, Ditie from Harbin in Heiliangjiang province. Ditie was a business partner of the owner and not even a paying guest. So if you stay at the hotel from Monday to Thursday or Friday, expect to have very few guests.
If you stay during the weekend, I strongly recommend you book in advance because hordes of tourist from Shanghai come up during the weekend and most hostels and hotels are booked out
